As is our tradition at the Riverside, we have once again set up a new location for a holiday. We always have a great time when we do this and this time it’s for one of the most colourful and festive holidays of the year, Cinco de Mayo. Too be honest hailing from Canada, it was a holiday I didn’t know much about so off to Wikipedia I went my Window’s clipboard in hand. This is what they had to say.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16.

Who knew? I think it is interesting that the same holiday is celebrated for different reasons in each country. In Second Life, we have visitors from all corners of the globe so we celebrate it for fun. We always have a ball at the Riverside. Take a look at some of these pictures.

“Hey Vali? Do you think they have Dr. Pepper in the cantina? Doctor Chile?”

I wonder if she mixes it with her tequila? How about a Dr. Pepper Margharita?

UlantD Tp’ed in from Switzerland to enjoy our Cinco festivities. We’re popular with the jet-set crowd. 😛

I think one of the great aspects of Second Life is seeing things from different view points all over the world. Whether it be opinions, holidays, fashions etc.

Dakota Glenwalker enjoying the mariachi’s.

Another Canadian at the Riverside. How many of them are there anyways? Do we have enough maple syrup?

DJ Sherman has a lovely set of maracas.

Tell me I’m wrong. Go on.

Mucho gringos!

Equal parts sun screen and cerveza, gringos crowded the dance floor of the Riverside.

You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat Catrin to the Cantina. Literally. She starts at 6AM SLT.

Our Norwegian blues connection, Catrin Galaxy. Gotta love it. A Norwegian DJ playing blues in a Mexican cantina owned by Canadians.

Ferdinand saw the bull fight poster and decided he was better off offering Maggie a rose instead of his horns.

I hope you folks enjoy it when we move to different locations as much as we do. I think it keeps things fresh and allows people to dress differently and try some new things.
